The Chicago Marathon 2023: All Information

The Illinois Chicago Marathon is a global annual event that attracts 1.7 million+ spectators, cheering for the runners as they glide through the city streets. Sunday, 8 October 2023, will be the 45th edition of the marathon event that started in 1977. 

It's only nine months away before 29 neighborhoods of Chicago witness the 45,000+ athletes race for titles and personal best records. You can expect it to be a weekend filled with fun and competitiveness.

Chicago Marathon World Records

The Chicago marathon has a history of bringing out the best of elite runners who end up toppling world record times and national records in both the men's and women's categories. So far, there have been five world records.

● 1984: Steve Jones (2:08:05)

● 1999: Khalid Khannouchi (2:05:42)

● 2001: Catherine Ndereba (2:18:47)

● 2002: Paula Radcliffe (2:17:18)

● 2019: Brigid Kosgei (2:14:04)

Emily Sisson is America's national record holder who ran a time of 2:18:29 in the Chicago marathon 2022. The current Chicago course record is held by the Kenyan Dennis Kimetto, who crossed the finish line at 2:03:45 in 2013. 

With so many days to prepare for the Chicago Marathon 2023, you can expect elite runners to be in their best form to challenge the current world record held by Eliud Kipchoge in 2022 (2:01:09).

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon 2023 registrations are closed for guaranteed and non-guaranteed runners. The applications closed on 17 November 2022, and participants should have received their confirmation status by 8 December 2022.

Chicago Marathon 2023 Run for Charity

If you missed out on the 45,000 open field slots, you could still participate in the Chicago Marathon 2023 by joining one of the Official 180 non-charity programs available. But participants who join through charity programs should raise to $1,750 minimum.

The funds raised through charities support over 10 global causes. 

Chicago Marathon 2023 Cut-off Time

The cut-off limit is 6.5 hours which starts after the last person from the final Wave crosses the start line. If you run outside this set time, you won't be recorded as an official Chicago Marathon 2023 finisher and therefore miss out on any awards and medals.

● First Wave (red): 7:30 a.m.

● Second Wave (blue): 8 a.m.

● Third Wave (orange): 8:35 a.m.

Grant Park access to Spectators: 9:30 a.m.

● No registration refunds or transfers (except for individuals that paid extra for the refundable option during registration).

● Avail your pick-up email and Photo ID at the Expo to receive your race packet and bag.

● All participants SHOULD collect their race pack individually.
