Thus the similarities in some of their features. On top of that, both brands have exercise bikes, rowing machines, ellipticals as well as treadmills.
NordicTrack and Proform have the best work out machines out there today. Unfortunately, workout machines can be quite expensive. For that, you’ve to decide between these brands at the end of the day. But, which one is the best brand for you; Proform or NordiTrack?
Well, stick around to find out! In this article, I’ll be looking at some significant differences between these fitness equipment powerhouses!
A Brief History of Each Brand
Proform
Unlike NordicTrack, Proform was initially a trampoline manufacturer. It was established by Scott Watterson and Garry Stevenson in 1977. Eventually, the company expanded to include exercise bikes, indoor rowers, and treadmills.
Joseph Weider, the owner of Weider Health & Fitness, later bought Proform Company. However, like his predecessor, Weider sold the company to IHF Capital In in 1994. This brand and other companies were renamed to form the renowned Icon Health & Fitness.

Nordictrack
As I stated above, both Proform and NordicTrack are owned by Icon Health & Fitness. However, NordicTrack was originally owned by Florence and Edward Pauls. Edward was a VJC cross-country ski racer. He designed a ski training machine in his garage to practice for the race every day after work.
Florence and Edward later discovered that this machine was great for cardiovascular exercise. And they continue manufacturing the machines in their basement in 1975. Their products were initially referred to as ‘Nordic Jock’. But the company name eventually changed to the popular ‘NordicTrack’ we know today.
In 1986, CML Corporation bought NordicTrack. They started manufacturing and selling the NordicTrack ski Machine alongside other workout equipment. The brand experienced significant expansion until CML Corporation declared bankruptcy in 1998. That’s when NordicTrack was acquired by its current manufacturer: Icon Health & Fitness.

Major Differences Between NordicTrack Vs. Proform
Apart from being owned by one company, Proform & NordicTrack share the assembly line. But they are different brands. On one hand, Icon Health & Fitness see NordicTrack equipment as their high-end brand. On the other, they consider Proform workout equipment as a mid-range brand.
That is not the only way their workout machines differ though. Instead, there are other factors that can help you make a decision. These include;
1. Motors
The motor is an important component of a treadmill and other workout machines. It’s usually measured in continuous HP (horsepower). This refers to the amount of power that it can withstand over time.
In simpler terms, motors with more horsepower can switch speeds and inclines faster. This, however, doesn’t mean that motor HP will always lead to a smoother run. If you’re an average jogger, I would recommend you look for a treadmill with a 2.5HP motor or more.
Proform and NordicTrack treadmills have different-sized motors. Luckily, both brands have motors that will match your fitness levels and needs.
The horsepower range for all Proform models is between 2.5 and 4.5Hp. For instance, according to the Proform ZT8 preview, the equipment has a 2.6CHP motor. While the Pro 9000 treadmill has a 3.6CHP motor. Therefore, Proform equipment is generally good for running and jogging.
On the contrary, the motor size of NordicTrack treadmills ranges from 2.7 to 4.25CHP. A good example is their T7O.S and NordicTrack 1750 treadmills which have 2.75 and 4.25CHP horsepower. Another notable example is the NordicTrack Elite 7700 treadmill which has a 4.0HP motor. More powerful motors mean that the machine needs to work less at a certain speed. This enhances the equipment’s performance and extends it longevity. More importantly, this makes them ideal for serious runners and multiple-user families.
2. Cost
If you’re sensitive to cost, this will probably be the determining aspect for you. In general, the Proform brand is seen as slightly lower-end equipment than NordicTrack. And this is reflected well in their prices.
The cost of most NordicTrack treadmills ranges from about $1000 to $4,000. On the other hand, Proform has some models that are less than $1000. In other words, if you’re on a budget, Proform treadmills may be the best option for you. Overall, Proform is way more affordable as compared to the NordicTrack brand.
3. Workout Programs
Most NordicTrack and ProForm treadmills come with a variety of in-built workout programs. You can even connect the machines to the internet remotely and download workouts. Moreover, this will allow you to create customized programs and even monitor your workout progress.
With ProForm models such as Proform ZT8 Treadmill, you’ll have access to 18 – 40 programs. Also, you can opt for the iFit subscription and get more treadmill workouts for weight loss. Thanks to the compatibility of these machines with iFit Coach. This will offer you an interactive virtual terrain since it's compatible with Google Maps.
Like Proform models, NordicTrack treadmills come with inbuilt workout programs. However, they’ve more programs than Proform models. To be precise, NordicTrack machines can have 20 – 44 exercise programs. On top of that, you’ll get a 1-year membership once you buy any recent NordicTrack model.
4. Warranty
When it comes to warranty, NordicTrack and Proform are almost the same. This is probably because the machines are manufactured by the same company. All in all, a warranty demonstrates that the manufacturer stands behind its products. However, you should note that each model has its specific warranty option. So, before you choose a certain model, it’s good to review what its warranty covers.
In most cases, ProForm warranties include;
- Lifetime warranty on frames, decks, and motors.
- 1-2 years on labor
- 1, 2 or 5 years on parts
- 30-day trial period for a refund
Note, this warranty only extends to the initial buyer. Also, shipping for replacement parts and to service centers for Nordictrack console repair will be at your cost.
On the contrary, NordicTrack warranty includes;
- Lifetime warranty on frames and motors
- 2 years on labor
- 5 years for electronics and parts
- 30-day trial period for a refund (minus shipping & restocking fee)
For this warranty to hold, you need to ensure that the equipment is still in good condition. Also, you have to return the paperwork and original paperwork. Otherwise, you’ll have to pay an extra 10% fee.
